Headlight LED Bulb Not Working? Common Causes and Solutions
Is your headlight LED bulb not working as it
should? In many cases, trouble with car headlight bulbs comes down to incorrect
installation. Anything from reversed polarity to loose connections and poor
bulb alignment can cause the problem.
CANBUS compatibility issues
If you drive a modern vehicle, it may be
using a CANBUS system to monitor the headlight circuit. The unit monitors how
much power each headlight LED bulb draws to check whether it is working
correctly. The system may incorrectly register that an LED bulb has failed
since it uses less power than a halogen bulb. This can trigger a dashboard
warning light or cause the bulb to switch off shortly after you turn it on.
The fix depends on your vehicle. In some
cases, you should be able to solve the problem by installing LED bulbs with
built-in CANBUS error-cancelling technology. Other vehicles may need load
resistors or anti-flicker harnesses to provide the electrical load that the
CANBUS system expects.
Polarity issues
Polarity is one of the first things you
should check if your LED car headlight bulbs
don’t turn on at all.
Unlike halogen bulbs, LED bulbs need the
positive and negative terminals connected in the correct direction. Since
halogen connectors can often be plugged in either way, it's easy to install an
LED bulb with the polarity reversed.
Fixing it is simple by unplugging the LED
bulb and rotating the connector 180 degrees. From there, you can reconnect it
securely and test it again. In many cases, that's all it takes to get the bulb
working.
Blown fuses
Sometimes, the wiring can accidentally touch
a metal surface while you’re installing new LED bulbs. This creates a short
circuit that blows the fuse on your headlight
LED bulb.
When that happens, you need to visually check
the fuse or test it with a multimeter if you have one. You may need to replace
it with one of the correct amperage rating.
If the new fuse blows immediately, stop
testing and inspect the wiring for damaged insulation or exposed wires before
replacing it again.
Faulty wiring or connectors
If the polarity is correct and the fuse is
intact, it's time to inspect the wiring and connectors of your car headlight
bulbs. Even a slightly loose connection can interrupt the power supply and stop
the LED bulb from working.
Check that the connector is firmly locked
into place. At the same time, look for bent pins and corrosion inside the
connector, or even broken locking tabs. It's also worth checking if the wiring
harness is under tension, as this can pull the connector loose once everything
is reassembled.
In many cases, simply disconnecting the plug
and reconnecting it firmly is enough to restore normal operation.
Water ingress
When water gets inside your headlight LED
bulb housing, it can short-circuit the LED driver module and corrode the
electrical connectors. Worse, it could even blow a fuse.
Drain any moisture and dry all the affected
components thoroughly if you notice condensation or standing water inside the
housing. You should also find the source of the leak so you don’t have to worry
about the same problem again.
Driver module failure
Your LED headlight relies on a driver module
to supply a steady flow of power to the LED chips. If that module fails, you
may experience flickering with dashboard warning messages, or a headlight that
stops working altogether.
To confirm the problem, check that the driver
module is receiving power and cross-test the components if possible. When the
driver module fails, it’s time to replace it.
Vehicle compatibility
Sometimes, your new LED car headlight bulbs
aren’t working simply because they’re incompatible with your vehicle. So, be
sure to double-check that they're designed for your vehicle and its headlight
system before buying anything. Choosing the correct bulb from the start can
save you a lot of troubleshooting later on.
Troubleshooting before replacing the bulb
Before you assume the headlight LED bulb has
failed, make sure you've installed the correct bulb type.
One look at certain automotive bulbs and you
might think they all look the same until you realise they’re not electrically
compatible. 9005 and 9006 bulbs have a similar appearance, but you can’t
actually swap them. The same applies to H11 and H8, as well as H9 bulbs. If you
install the wrong bulb or fit a standard LED bulb into a CK socket, it may not
work at all or only one function may operate.
When the problem isn't the bulb
Sometimes, a faulty ballast or LED control
module can produce many of the same symptoms, including flickering or complete
headlight failure.
To identify the cause, cross-test the
components where possible and check that the ballast or control module is
receiving power. If you confirm that the unit has failed, replace it with a
matching part number. It's also worth checking for signs of moisture damage, as
water ingress can damage these components over time.
